[Book Notes] Be Useful: Seven Tools for Life
Arnold writes self-help, and he may be one of the few people actually qualified to do it.
1. Have a clear vision. Imagine everything you want to do — later today or in 20 years — so vividly that it feels like it has already happened. Then do that many, many times.
2. Never think small. Don't limit yourself. Aiming for the highest achievement demands that you learn the world's best methods. You may not ultimately reach that end state, but by constantly working toward the peak you'll go far.
3. Work your ass off. We all have 24 hours in a day. Use each of the 60 seconds.
4. Sell, sell, sell. Arnold sold everything he did — from the idea of bodybuilding globally, to raising the cultural status of his roles in movies, to running for office.
5. Shift gears. When faced with adversity, shift from low to whatever high the crisis requires.
6. Shut your mouth, open your ears. Listening really saved his second election. If you talk more than you listen, you can only repeat what you already know. Listen to users.
7. Break your mirrors. Get out of your own little world. Roll your sleeves up and help those around you. You'll get more from it.
Lessons for me: Don't forget to visualize. Sell everything you're doing. Work with students and actually help them prepare for college, especially with Zell Miller.
