[Book Notes] The Billionaire and the Mechanic
Larry Ellison is one of the greatest entrepreneurs of our times. After studying a couple hundred founders, I feel like he and I have a lot of similarities. I will continue to learn more about him in the upcoming days. The book interested me in sailing.
Highlights
A hobby became an obsession over a couple of decades. Larry attempted the America's Cup three times before winning, spending $100–$200 million each time. He won when he got involved hands-on, on deck, racing in the waters with the team.
Winning opened doors and opportunities he did not see before going into the race. He fought hard but needed solitude to reset his mind between sprints. He spoke his mind and was gracious, but thoughtful.
Ideal outfit: gray slacks and a gray cashmere sweater from J.Crew. His homemade Japanese housekeeper occasionally wept because it reminded her of home. He was a close friend of Steve Jobs.
